Turkish Riviera

Turkish Riviera

Colorful, craggy cliffs encase mysterious coves accessible only by boat as the Turkish Riviera’s perforated shoreline invites those with a penchant for the secluded, the mysterious and the breathtakingly beautiful. Aptly named the Turquoise Coast, the waters here are composed of a deep and silky blue that is emboldened into azure blends out into the vast Mediterranean. A few more pulls at the paddle and you’ll come face to face with a spectacular, endless coastline of nothing but pristine sand and, oftentimes, isolation.

The Turkish Riviera is a hot destination, paradoxically, because it has not been overrun by tourists. This has allowed it to retain the undeveloped charm that many argue has spoiled more conventional beach destinations in Greece and Spain. On top of that, the natural beauty is inimitable, and the locals who greet you at the fishing villages dotting the shoreline are accustomed to tourists, yes, but still possess a certain innocence and authenticity, the likes of which is rarer and harder to find among the more jaded locals of better trafficked tourist spots throughout Europe.

In addition to the small coastal towns, slightly inland tourists will find ancient villages that once acted as important commercial centers – the Turquoise Coast is one of the most historically important stretches of land on the planet, with little known of many of its ancient inhabitants and traders, and port cities that now find themselves well-recessed from the coast – it’s been a while since the merchant ships of yore docked in those harbors. The Lycians, which settled part of the Turquoise coast, were cited in the famous work of poetry, the Iliad.

The Blue Voyages have mythical, legendary connotations in Turkey, and have caught on as a seductive and rewarding option for travelers of the Blue Cruise, a fantastic package of luxury, leisure and delight that takes you through some of Turkey’s most breathtaking coastline, winding up on the Turquoise Coast, the Turkish Riviera.

While every inch of this coastline is rich with beauty and worth exploring, even meditating over its rare charm, there is one beach that is worth explicitly recommending by name, the Kaputas Beach. Here the forested cliff sides seem to careen violently into the glassy aquamarine water, completely still and serene, unnoticing. This balance of drama and placidity will affect you on a spiritual level, and you will come out rejuvenated.
