Bodrum Bodrum doesn’t sleep, although its calmest hours come as you stretch out on the beach mid-morning and the bright sun warms and heals you from the debauchery of the night before. More than sunshine, however, are the innumerable fun things to do – after all, Bodrum, which consists of two splendid harbors and is packed with resorts, offers family fun and entertainment and honeymoon packages, in addition to catering to the standard fare of merrymakers.
In the daytime, wooden boats called “gullets” fill the harbor during the summer months, hearkening to the packed bays of Hong Kong and other Asian cities, reminding tourists of the inherent balance between East and West that Turkey constantly straddles. These boats will take tourists to go island hopping through the nearby archipelago. From these harbors those who are seeking to be lost in the majesty of legend can embark on the infamous Blue Cruise, which carries people away into a dreamscape of Mediterranean coastal vistas.
Of course, many make it to Bodrum for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Although it’s practically gone, these ruins are of the first, Ancient Seven Wonders of the World, and so much historical import is derived that it continues to attract throngs of visitors every year. For a more intact historical attraction, the Bodrum Amphitheatre makes use of the natural line of nature, a hillside coning down and inward toward a stage.
There are several beaches at Bodrum but by far the best is the Bitez Beach, which combines a wealth of water sports – swimming, snorkeling, parasailing and more – and international company, fellow pilgrims here to worship the sun. Of course, as the sun makes its fiery exit in and explosion of a famed Bitez sunset, the clubs light up and the infamous Bodrum nightlife officially begins. Grind to the sumptuous flavor of the night as some of the Europe’s best House, Trance and Techno pounds from the clubs, and hot spots are popping up everywhere. Decidedly a counterpoint to conservative Turkish culture, the nightlife in Bodrum will definitely make dreams come true. |
