Gran Canaria Seemingly endless, silky sand dunes roll across the island like waves frozen in time, spilling off into the frothy blue of the Atlantic Ocean. Bizarre geological structures crop up from the volcanic hilltop, sparkling emerald mountains jut up and perch upon mini-peninsulas; Gran Canaria, the third largest island in the Canaries archipelago is a breathtaking destination with a superb blend of scenic beauty and action-packed nightlife.
Apart from natural splendor it is a prime beach resort destination attracting the revel makers from all over Europe, and across the globe, in one of the hottest party destinations west of Ibiza. Start the day out on Las Cantaras, relaxing idly on the soft, golden sand. Pick up for a game of beach volleyball, tennis or jump in and swim or surf in the delightfully refreshing Atantic waters. The oceanic sunsets here are incredible, and as the pink, orange and magenta of the sky colors the white, beachside hotel high-rises, it is hard not to be overcome by a sense of placid grace. This is only a calm before the storm, however, as Playa Las Cantaras virtually explodes into a madhouse of pulsing techno, sexy dancing and after hours extending to mid-day, the next day. Remember that while you may feel abandoned out here in the Atlantic, you’re still very much in Spain.
Provided you’re in proper condition the next day, take advantage of the brightly lit diurnal hours to explore this islands exquisite treasures, which include historical attractions, secluded beaches, and amazing geological formations. The Roque Nublo is a volcanic cropping upon which a pair of veritable monoliths protrudes, evoking the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey. You don’t have to jump around like an ape, just take in the great view, snap some photos and move on to the Maspalomas Dunes, remarkable for their undulating simplicity more than anything else. The Aldea Beach is sure to make a hit with romantic couples seeking to escape from the crowds and find beauty and seclusion as the warm trade winds caress their bare skin.
Hotels lodging can be found clumped around the main resort areas, although private apartment rentals for families and couples on vacation are widely available throughout the island, many offering spectacular waterfront views. Restaurants on the island cater to the best of continental taste, at Gran Canaria, you’re in for a treat in more ways than one. |
