Costa de la Luz

Costa de la Luz

Facing the Atlantic Ocean, rather than the Mediterranean, makes the Costa de la Luz incredibly unique in Spain, its fine combination of resort beach paradises mixed with untouched wetlands gives it an unparalleled diversity – this coastline appeals to both carefree merrymakers and studious nature lovers, all of whom may end up letting their hair down at any of the fine establishments of entertainment – bars, clubs, discos – that serve the burgeoning tourism industry at the Costa de la Luz.

La Caleta Beach, with its soft sand and numerous, scantily clad sunbathers, is a sun-worshiper’s dream come true. After all, the direct translation of Costa de la Luz is “Coast of Light”, whose unrelenting sunshine with bronze your skin into a slightly darker hue. Slather on the suntan oil and prepare for some serious exertion…lying in the sun. If you really want to get active, then a variety of exciting water sports is available to vacationers such as yachting and fishing. Local fishermen make for great company, the Spanish are renowned for their friendliness.

Yet the Costa de la Luz can be hardly understood until one take the time to tour the Wetlands of Donana, a birdwatcher’s paradise. Starting with just the flora, the golden grassy expanse here is enough to take ones breath away with its simplistic, pastoral beauty. This is broken, however, by pockets of green grass and Dr. Seuss-like trees bursting forth in verdant lusciousness. One of the largest wetlands in Europe, Donana is home to various endangered fowl including the Larus genei gull and the Marmaronetta Duck. The natural richness of this spot has led to its inscription in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Directory.

The Atlantic winds make Cape Trafalgar a world-renowned spot for kite surfing, a sport which has accelerated in popularity due to the extreme sense of thrill and daringness that its practitioners possess. Cape Trafalgar is almost constantly windy, and kitesurfers regularly take off onto the water and sometimes roll along the sand with specially designed boards. Overall, the Costa de la Luz has something for everyone – whether you seek relaxation, nature, or active pursuits.
