Sightseeing in Switzerland

Alpine backdrops to mountainous countryside provide somewhat daunting imagery for what is really quite native charm of the Swiss farmland, where warm hospitality combines with Swiss perfection to provide guests a first class experience even in the most remote-seeming regions of the Swiss countryside.

During the months of winter Swiss ski resorts spread their arms wide open for all of Europe to shoot down the pristine white slopes and snap shots of the Matterhorn, which is but another imposing mountain that does little justice to the kind, humble cordiality of the Swiss people. Hiking trails abound throughout the countryside during the summer, although surprisingly many of the Swiss ski resorts can eek out a little bit of snow on their slopes, even during the summer months!

The French side of Switzerland is home to Lake Geneva, one of the most splendid destinations full of exciting attractions and fun things to do. Water sports enthusiasts will soak up the swimming, sailing, jet skiing, and kite surfing and wind surfing – this lake gets its fair share of good breezes – and sun bathing. Can sun bathing be considered a water sport? In Switzerland, yes. In addition to active pursuits, Lake Geneva is home to historic, architectural attractions such as the St. Pierre Cathedral, which was the focal point for Calvinists during a larger part of the 1500’s.

Up north in Zurich, an even older Cathedral calls for your attention; the Grossmunster, which means “Great Church” in Swiss German, dates back to the 1100’s and is a stunning example of the dual tower style prominent for that time period, in Zurich. Basel is a basket brimming over with sightseeing delight. What with the rich collection of art museums and galleries, as well as the stately cathedrals, and other architectural attractions, Basel is a must-see of your Swiss itinerary. Start out at the Basel Kunsthalle (art gallery) and then make your way on to the Museum of Fine Art. You will have hardly scratched the surface. The main Munster (cathedral) in Basel is also quite impressive. Be sure to check out the interior.
