Sightseeing in Slovakia

Many travel to Slovakia purely to reach the pristine, mountainous regions and the glassy splendor of its countless lakes, embedded like jewels amidst the heights. Slovakia’s natural landscape is a breathtaking slice of Europe largely under marketed due to the precariousness of the country’s economic situation. While this is slowly changing, Slovakia still continues to be a delightful destination for those who love outdoor adventure and active pursuits including hiking and mountain climbing.

Those seeking more cultural and historical attractions in Slovakia will find most reward in the city of Bratislava, which is the cultural capital of Slovakia. A good place to start out is the Old Town, where curving cobblestone streets when their way through charming, Medieval homes and the aristocratic mansions of the Hungarian overlords; Hungary ruled Slovakia for approximately eight centuries. In addition to the living, breathing museum that tourists can enjoy by strolling through the streets, visiting galleries and sipping delightful berry-flavored Hungarian palinkas (after-dinner liquor) or espresso, there is a museum with exhibits of artifacts chronicling the history of Bratislava’s amazing Old Town.

The castle in Bratislava, or Hrad, is also worth checking out. Even if you’re all castled-out after having visited seven other European countries and all of their castles, the Bratislava Hrad is unique. Also check out the Jewish Museum, which, through art and artifacts, shows the long, noble history of the Jews in Slovakia. A couple of virtually undiscovered attractions in Slovakia can be found in the small town of Bardejov, the church of St. Egidius and the impressive religious icon artwork held within.

The Tatras National Park just outside of Tatranska Lomnica is one of the most pristine and beautiful in all of Slovakia, and is where most adventure sports travelers migrate to immediately, for its stern, challenging cliff sides. Lighter hikers also find enjoyment here, the verdant vistas provide scenic delight nearly every boot-step of the way.
