Culture Poland

Polish culture is remarkably profound, yearning and metaphysical, and yet despite this veil of seriousness, all travelers coming from Poland report nothing but the most raucous, wild and fun-filled vacations – certainly not to be expected from what might, on the surface, appear to be such a gray and dour destination.

What is the secret to duality of charm and insight that marks the Polish culture? Some might attribute it to the powerful, 90-proof vodka that any Polish farmhouse or aristocratic mansion will have a large supply of on stock – Poland is well irrigated. Those who love food, however, might lean further toward opining that it is the delectable Polish cuisine, or kuchnia polska which brings the exotic, Mediterranean flavors together with the hearty sumptuousness of its central European neighbors, and gives Polish culture such a stimulating sheen. After all, the Polish version of the Hungarian goulash is to die for, just please, please don’t say this to a Hungarian! Interestingly, many Polish dishes will also reveal that food in Poland is influenced significantly by France and Italy. But then again, who isn’t?

Artistically speaking, the Poles have an evocative and turbulent history that has rendered some of Europe’s most interesting experiments, and works. Communism played a strong role in tamping down the artistic movement, pigeonholing it into the dark alley of Socialist Realism that is responsible for the drab, soviet architecture and uninspired prose, arts, music and poetry produced by hacks who towed the Party Line. Nevertheless, as any historian knows, attempts to suppress art only cause for it to reemerge in other forms. Oftentimes oppression can be a catalyst for creation. When the pot of Polish culture boiled over as the lid of communism was taken off, a delightful explosion of culture was revealed by today’s greats who include Henryk Górecki, the composer, and Ryszard Kapuscinski, the famous Polish writer.

Geographically speaking, Poland has always been in a precarious position that has affected its culture in many ways. Buffeted by Balkan and Russian powers, Poland has had a challenge finding its bearings in the wake of regional change. Ascendancy to the European Union has improved the country’s fortunes, and visitors are sure to encounter signs of Polish progress throughout their journey.
