Sightseeing in the Netherlands Tulips and windmills capture the imagination of many visitors to the Netherlands, while the permissive fame of Amsterdam pulls in its own special fan base. Holland is one of the cleanest, most efficient, tolerant, artistic and progressively minded countries in all of Europe, and visiting the numerous urban and countryside attractions in the Netherlands is a delight for any traveler, no matter what your stripe.
To get it out of our system, let’s first visit Amsterdam’s Red Light district, which is an intensely cultural sight to see for anybody, regardless of what level of participation you might be looking to engage in. It’s all legal, and largely safe as well. Moving on, throughout Amsterdam the “coffee shop” culture means a lot more than coffee. Legal pot smoking is actually quit a money maker as younger tourists make a pilgrimage to have the thrill of smoking or eating high quality marijuana in a place where it is decriminalized.
Yet the beauty of Amsterdam is that more traditional tourists who choose not to take part in the legal culture of sex trade and controlled substance can vacation in Amsterdam as if those elements didn’t exist. Indeed, that’s the beauty that Dutch society seeks to uphold – co-existence, without conflict. As such, a traveler can take a gondola down any of the glassy channels coursing through Amsterdam, reflecting the colorful gingerbread style architecture of the neatly packed houses lining the channels. A traveler can visit the ruddy colored Rijksmuseum and discover untold beauty in the Rembrandts and the impressionistic sculpture held within. A traveler can rent a bicycle and tour the city in any of the smoothly paved, multi-lane bicycle thoroughfare. Stoned, if he likes, or completely sober. In Amsterdamn, there are no limits to your enjoyment.
Outside of Amsterdam, the appeal becomes even greater. Rotterdam is known as the true underground of Holland, where all the beauty and permissiveness of Amsterdam exists, without all the touristy hype. You’ll get a more authentic feel for Dutch culture as you visit the amazing attractions in Rotterdamn, including the Fraeylemaborg, one of the Netherlands’ most impressive castles. |
