Sightseeing in Hungary With a remarkable suspension bridge, imposing Parliament building, captivating Old City and one of the most scenic stretches of the Danube river in all of Hungary – largely because of the splendid Baroque architecture lining it – Budapest surprisingly doesn’t overshadow the rest of Hungary, whose vast forested countryside is home to innumerable fairytale castles and medieval villages which seem trapped in time. And, of course, who could forget the fantastic beachside resorts surrounding Lake Balaton! Hungary is chock full of attractions that appeal to travelers of all stripes.
The best starting point for a sightseeing tour of Budapest is undisputedly the Hero’s Square, ringed by glorious white arches surrounding a wide swath of concrete, in the center of which stands proud, green copper rusted pair of statues in pitched glorious battle. There’s also a great Irish pub nearby. And also, right alongside the Hero’s Square, the art museum shows regular experimental exhibitions revealing the bizarre Hungarian sense of humor and style that has carved out a niche for architectural greats in the modern world. A lesser-known and thoroughly delightful attraction in Hungary are the Turkish baths, just ask around for Szechenyi and you’ll be treated to a spa fit for royalty at a breathtakingly low price.
Visegrad in the north of Hungary offers is home to what the Visigrad locals call a “castle,” while you’ll most likely regard this imposing fortress as a citadel of sorts; perched upon a high up hilltop, the Visigrad castle it is visible far and wide – as its original architects no doubt had in mind. Nearby the castle, locals and Hungarian tourists enjoy a form of go-karts on a wooden track. It is a thrilling experience although not necessarily fit for children. Descend the mountain and take a ferry on the Danube from the docks of Visegrad, the old school paddle wheel boat give you the pleasure of wind in your hair and a scenic view of the breathtaking northerly Hungarian countryside.
Lake Balaton is a Mecca for Hungarian youth, whose bacchant side is revealed – in all essences of the word – with daylong sun soaking water sports and a pounding nightlife that can put major European party capitals to shame, although the Spanish Ibiza and Greek Ios certainly continue to lead the pack. |
