The Netherlands holds a unique position in northern Europe. Its ragged coastline has made it by default a major shipping center, berthing ships from all four corners. A week spent here will bring you into contact with one of Europe’s most progressive societies. The country’s inhospitable lands have forged strong bonds within Netherlands society, which is widely known for its live and let live approach to vice codes.

City streets in Amsterdam are as crowded as anywhere else, with one important difference. In the city’s downtown, roads run along mesmerizing canals that expand as they move away from the city center. Tourists find they need to step lively as trams swiftly ferry passengers to their destinations and fleets of bicycles whoosh by. Check your map twice in Amsterdam (though an exploratory detour can also be part of the fun).

Cities in the Netherlands are built to fight the forces of floods and winter cold. Complicated countermeasures are employed to ensure that coastal cities are not submerged when rivers swell and tides rise. The environment has further left a mark in the construction of a typical Netherlands home - the A-frame design keeps snow from gathering on the roof.

Colorful houses and storefronts line snowy streets like the teeth of a saw. Downtown areas in many of Holland’s cities are broken up by colorful public parks and gardens. Tulips are rightly associated with the Netherlands, as they are well represented in almost any garden, and popular flower market. Tulip motifs are found adorning doorframes, menus and signs throughout the country, with the flower having become an ad hoc national emblem.

The Netherlands’s windy plains lands and green hills further influence local character. In another adaptation to regional conditions, wind power is harnessed for agricultural purposes. The windmill, closely associated with the country, is widely employed to this day. Long distance bicycle tours offer a view of the structures more in keeping with the moderate pace of local life.

The country’s powerful shipping industry has ensured its status as an important international partner. High tech industries and an outstanding university system are strong incentives for personal and company relocation.
