Tuscany Siena What was it about Siena that had so many armies and alliances fighting so hard to conquer it throughout its turbulent past? Visit Siena, and you’ll immediately understand. The tall medieval spires, the cobblestone streets, the floral ornament create one of Tuscany’s most anciently vivacious cities in existence. Scholars opine that, due to the constant battling over this territory from the Middle Ages up till recently, that Siena spent more time defending itself than it did developing.
For the Tuscan tourist, this is not a problem at all; the charming splendor of the Dark Ages has never been lifted, and you’ll immediately have a sense of the weight of history as you stroll through the mysterious cobblestone streets.
Attractions in Siena include the Torre del Mangia, a structure which towers high above many other buildings in town, and which vacationers like you, to this day, can ascend and gain quite a perspective. You’ll take in an urban vista chock full of red tile roofs, broken only by deep, dark cracks within the commotion of city life is milling about unseen below. The Basilica di San Domenico is a veritable relic of the 12th Century, a time when monks in Italy and throughout Europe were experiencing a renaissance-like revival that is often glossed over in mainstream history lessons. Nevertheless, you’ll see it here: a tribute to the glory of a bright revival in the midst of a dark, dark epoch.
It is also highly recommended that you visit the Castello di Brolio, similarly of the 12th Century, which is evidence of a revival of a slightly more spirited nature: winemaking. Indeed, the Brolio Castle has stayed under the control of the same family longer than any other winery on the planet. Be sure to take the tour and taste a rich, red Chianti from the local caskets – remember, however to call ahead for a reservation.
Finding a place to stay in Siena shouldn’t be hard, but, especially during the peak summer months when tourists come here in droves, you’ll experience much less hassle if you book hotel reservations online, or arrange an apartment or villa rental well in advance. |
