The tall medieval spires, the cobblestone streets, the floral ornament create one of Tuscany’s most anciently vivacious cities in existence. You’ll take in an urban vista chock full of red tile roofs, broken only by deep, dark cracks within the commotion of city life is milling about unseen below. The Basilica di San Domenico is a veritable relic of the 12th Century, a time when monks in Italy and throughout Europe were experiencing a renaissance-like revival that is often glossed over in mainstream history lessons. Nevertheless, you’ll see it here: a tribute to the glory of a bright revival in the midst of a dark, dark epoch.
It is also highly recommended that you visit the Castello di Brolio, similarly of the 12th Century, which is evidence of a revival of a slightly more spirited nature: winemaking. Indeed, the Brolio Castle has stayed under the control of the same family longer than any other winery on the planet. Be sure to take the tour and taste a rich, red Chianti from the local caskets – remember, however to call ahead for a reservation.
