Tuscany Chianti Olive trees and vineyards, rolling hills over purple, green and smoldering ruddiness in the Tuscan sunset – Chianti is a dream destination for wine lovers, and those who would like to peak into the undiscovered realm of Italy’s sleepy past. Often overlooked for more hyped attractions such as Florence and the Tuscan coast, Chianti offers tourists one of Italy’s most tranquil, yet breathtaking landscapes.
Of course, many who have tried a delicious glass of deep red Chianti the world around must harbor some secret curiosity for this region, and travelers who are savvy enough to discover the Chianti landscape will undoubtedly spend a fare amount of time wine tasting in local cellars. Do note, however, that most wineries in Chianti – apart from the major operations – will require that you make advanced reservations. Do a web search or look in the local tourist pamphlet on your hotel. Often, the concierge will be able to recommend a tour, or know whether or not tours are available at the particular wineries of your interest.
Apart from wine tasting, outdoor sports in Chianti are practiced – and enjoyed – abundantly by locals and visitors alike. There are innumerable bicycle rental locations, and you can even join a bike tour and cycle around Chianti to get the full scope of the landscape. Another popular pursuit here is hiking, as many trails connect hilltops upon which medieval castles are perched, hearkening to a feudal, warlike past that contrasts with the pacific warmth of Italy today. Walk up the hills, and through the valleys, as the warm, Mediterranean breezes creep in and caress your face, and the sweet smell of fermenting wine (towards September) becomes so potent as to be intoxicating itself.
Apart from the famed Siena, to which tourists throng every year during the peak season of July and August, one of the most delightful destinations within Chianti is Radda, a delightful little villages that exudes a sense of ancient, yet folksy allure. Stroll along the cobblestone streets and find a hotel to spend the night at. Rental apartments are also popular among wise tourists who group together with friends and then make day trips throughout this spectacular region. |
