Lake Lugano Connecting the southern, Italian speaking Switzerland with one of the northernmost reaches of Italy, Lake Lugano offers a pristine, emerald blue getaway destination that combines Swiss comfort and service with the warmth and flare of Italian hospitality. Typically a coveted resort destination for the rich and famous, Lake Lugano is accessible to couples seeking to dash away (whether arriving from Paris, Rome, Zurich, or overseas) for a romantic weekend getaway, or families seeking the splendor of nature, relaxing spa resorts and children-friendly activities.
Resorts in Lake Lugano make a point of being top notch institutions, combining the rejuvenating mineral baths and spa treatments with vigorous, energizing water sports activities and land-based active pursuits including tennis, cycling and hiking expeditions arranged by the resorts. Independent travelers staying in rental apartments or luxury hotels on the waterfront can take part in these delightful ventures on their own, as well. The villages surrounding Lake Lugano typically offer bicycle and equipment rental for jet skiing, canoeing and windsurfing on the warm, life-inspiring breezes the lift up from the glassy surface of the water.
The historical attractions available to tour on Lake Lugano are interesting. When sightseeing in the town of Lugano, a good place to being your excursion is the Town Hall at Plaza Riforma. Other attractions along the coastline include the Civic Park of Villa Ciani, with floral lined paths leading out to breathtaking vistas of the lake below. Children will enjoy the playground, and adults the fabulous landscaping that does justice to this destination’s noble history. The Chiesa di San Rocco presents a vast collection of extraordinary frescos, although true fresco fans should check out the works of Bernardino Luini over at the Chiesa Santa Maria degli Angioli on the Swiss side of the lake.
Although the prices aren’t dramatically different, it is advised that you stick to the Italian side of the lake when seeking accommodations, whether it’s luxury lodging at fine beach resorts or rental apartments or chalets tucked into the verdant hillside, overlooking the lake. Camping and pensions are surprisingly hard to find here, although many good value lodging options make the Lake Lugano destination far from prohibitive. |
