Lake Garda

Lake Garda

If Italy didn’t have a coast, it wouldn’t really matter. The breathtaking glacial formation of Lake Garda, situated in the idyllic, stylish northern cuff of this boot-shaped country, is the largest lake in Italy and attracts throngs of visitors every year. They all fit, and despite the tens of thousands who come here annually, one gets a sense of primal discovery and peaceful seclusion; with such extensive shoreline, there’s room for everyone.

Yet apart from just water sports, spa resorts and romantic relaxation, Lake Garda offers tourists a rich and creamy slice of one of the world’s most historic – and enjoyable – countries. Mix a carefree vacation with ancient ruins, enchanting villages and warm, Italian charm, the cool pristine glassiness of the spectacular blue lake and countless outdoor activities, and you’ve got one of the best vacation destinations imaginable…in the world.

The charming villages and pulsing beach resorts spotting the circumference of Lake Garda only add to the allure. Sirmione gets superb winds throughout the peak season, and is therefore the home base of the Claudio Lana Professional Surf Center, a place where beginners to windsurfing can get their feet when, and season pros can take off and catch some incredible air as the refreshing, yet stern breezes swoop in from Alpine heights. The increasing popularity of kite surfing has almost overshadowed the windsurfers, although the lake is so large that everyone seems to peacefully coexist, even jet skiers, sailboats, canoes, swimmers and fishing enthusiasts.

Grotte di Catullo was, in its hay day, the biggest Roman settlement. Now it is a fascinating collection of ruins that even from the water’s surface (as you ferry by) will beckon strangely with their mysterious forms. Il Vittoriale is a bizarre, yet rewarding attraction as it combines the inherent strangeness of Italian fantasy constructions with the country’s profound past of culture and sophistication.

Lodging throughout the lake is a delightful experience, with luxury accommodation at waterfront spas and resorts regularly sought by international pleasure seekers.
