Zala Seekers of curative rest and relaxation have come to the right place at that Hungarian resort destination of Zala. So have lovers of spry activity and outdoor sports. Indeed, for those who love clean air, sunshine and the breathtaking pastoral landscape of Eastern Hungary, Zala one of the best places in Hungary to spend your vacation.
On one end of Zala lies the famous Lake Balaton, and the town of Keszthely, one of the hottest beach resort towns. On the southeast of the region lies the beautiful Mura River, and to the north is Zalaegerszeg, the biggest city in Zala. The combination of this triangle of pleasure, plus the rich, green forestland and charming villages dispersed throughout, make Zala a truly hot destination.
Keszthely has a bit of a superiority complex, although considering what it offers, you can’t really blame it for thinking itself better than the rest: it is. Indeed, owners of resorts and timeshares surrounding Lake Balaton look regretfully – even enviously – upon Keszthely. Not only is it one of the most pulsing, “happening” resort destinations on the Balaton, but it is also a popular university town with an authentic and buxom youth culture all year round. Whether you join the throngs of tourists during the July-August peak season or you hang around off season, good times will be had. When here, make a point to visit the spectacular Hévíz thermal lake, where resorts and fun await. Back in Keszthely is a good spot to find transportation to the rest of Zala.
Might want to take the bus or train straight to Zalaegerszeg and check out a series of fun and interesting attractions such as the fascinating Gocsej Museum, which exhibits the works of Zsigmond Kisfaludy-Strobl, a sculptor from Zalaegerszeg whose art provides a vista into the rural Hungarian consciousness. If you’re looking for things to do in Zalaegerszeg, either romantically or as a family, the Aqua Park provides delightful thermal baths as well as a wild water park for the kids.
Throughout Zala, numerous outdoor sports including cycling through the countryside, playing tennis, soccer and volleyball on the beaches of Lake Balaton, and signing in to championship level golf course resorts await the eager tourist. On the lake and down at the Mura River, the Hungarian passion for fishing is well satisfied, and a wide range of water sports are enjoyed. |
