Lake Balaton Prepare to get wet: Lake Balaton is Hungary’s most prized summer destinations for beach resorts, water sports, outdoor adventure and a wild, festive nightlife. Every summer, young and beautiful Hungarians as well as droves of international pleasure seekers and sun worshippers descend upon the banks of Lake Balaton in order to discover the smell of summer.
Because it’s so shallow, Lake Balaton remains a natural few degrees above the icy Black and Mediterranean seas. Don’t worry, it’s not that shallow – swimmers find great delight in the open ranges of the lakes cool, clean, inviting waters. Other water sports in Lake Balaton include sailing, swimming, windsurfing, jet skis, kayaking and more. There are numerous spots rent equipment for water sports along the way.
After drying off and taking in an hour or two (or more, why not) of the golden rays of the Hungarian sun, the re-energized can stand up and enjoy some fabulous beach volleyball, hop in on a soccer game or hit up the tennis courts – in, or out of the resorts. Further out from the shoreline, horseback riding is a hugely celebrated pastime, as is hiking through the pristine, verdant Hungarian hills, whose mystery evokes the flavor of medieval intrigue.
Indeed, apart from the wet and wild summertime action, Lake Balaton offers more than just the carefree mindlessness of beach resorts and hard bodies. Indeed, the historic villages embedded in the scenic hills and forests surrounding the lake provide superb examples of Europe’s rich past. The town of Veszprem, for example, features the lovely Castle Hill district which offers vacationers a cosmopolitan touch of charming architecture, cobblestone streets and grand medieval fortresses, hearkening back to Hungary’s rich, fascinating and complex history. Shopping, nightlife and exquisite lodging at good value can all be found in the Castle Hill district. |
