Santorini A shining city perched on a cliff side, the blinding white buildings capped by dreamy deep blue, pictures regularly steal the very breath from those who glimpse them in tourist brochures. People fortunate enough to visit this island are often rendered speechless. Santorini has been described as the most beautiful in all the Greek isles, nay, the World.
Along with Mykonos, Santorini (also known as Thira) is sparkling gem amidst the already impressive Cyclades. Not only does the town of Ia pose majestically for tourism photographs; it lives and breathes the enchanting culture of Greece, which pulls on millennia of sophistication to offer something incredibly charming and warm to this very day. As you stroll through the streets, incredible vistas and gentle Mediterranean breezes will meet you at every turn, while locals will be happy to put you up in their homes, will rental apartments and hotels offer good value, considering what a famed destination Ia is.
Even without the artful human touch of Ia, Santorini stands alone with a rugged, picturesque landscape that has inspired legend; the Santorini Volcano, a humongous crater ripped out from the center of the island, is thought by many to be the origin of the Atlantis fable, the lost continent. The ancient town of Akrotiri was covered over by the volcano’s ash, and soon you will be able to see the fully restored ruins. Newer, but still quite old are the ruins of Thirka. Where else can one see an amalgam of Roman, Hellenistic and Byzantine periods rolled into one ancient city?
For a more focused look at the magnitude of Santorini’s ancient past, the Archeological Museum of Pre-Historic Thira provides a superb collection of extremely well exhibited artifacts dating back thousands of years.
Of course, Santorini is a lot more than just museums and ruins and casual nodding at the houses you stroll by. Beautiful beaches provide a great way to enjoy fun in the sun with the whole family.
