Paros

Paros

You’ll end up passing through Paros as it’s a central transportation point among the Cyclades. Yet aside from a mere juncture as you make your way through the archipelago, Paros has numerous distinguishing factors that make it a much-sought destination of its own. The fact that up till now it’s been one of the cheaper islands seems only to have boosted its popularity – there’s really nothing to thumb your nose at here, and local restaurants and club owners are realizing that, by raising their prices. Worth every penny, though: nightlife in Paros is top-notch, comparing well with the other Cyclades islands. Also, the soft sand beaches are pristine and the old cities fascinating, and richly historical.

Naoussa is a charming little fishing village, with a harbor that virtually resounding with the gentle sound of waves lapping up against the parked yachts. This sound is drowned out with the joyful throbbing of this resort town at night. Hire a local tour guide or fisherman to take you out to sea, and get a bigger view of the mountainous island of Paros. Windsurfers and kite surfers will be happy to know that among the water sports launched from the endless beaches of Paros, theirs is one of the most compatible to the superb wind conditions here.

A more inland natural attraction is the emerald Valley of the Butterflies at Petaloudes Park, which, during May and June, becomes a captivating gorge full of the silent fluttering of beautiful winged butterflies. You must experience this spectacle in person to understand the sense of deep inner peace that unfolds from being surrounded by these magical creatures of wing.

Lovers of art should note that it’s Parian marble mined from this island that is the rock used in the Venus de Milo sculpture found in Paris’ Louvre. While the marble was carried away by the masters, the mountain remains, a breathtaking monument. Hike to the top to capture amazing panoramic vistas of the Cyclades. Luxury lodging in resorts and private rental apartments is big, with many options available to the short-term traveler – even many homes that will put up for a night or two. If you’re planning a mini resort vacation on Paros, it’s important to book ahead as this island is rapidly picking up in popularity.
