Levkas

Watching the sun burst into a colorful collection of pinks and violets over the breathtaking Ionian Sea – the Art Bridge is highly recommended – is a popular pastime on the Greek island of Levkas (also referred to as Lefkas, or Levkada).

One of the most stunning of the Ionian Islands, this is big enough to be connected by a bridge to the mainland and others including Corfu, Ithaka, Kithira, Kefalonia and others. Beyond the principle Ionian Islands there is a vast archipelago, which has captured the imaginations of travelers for centuries, if not millennia. Indeed, while the Cyclades seem to gather all the Greek hype these days, it’s the Ionians which first sparked modern interest in travel to Greece.

Beaches on the island of Levkas are incredible, although if you’re a fan of the secluded, romantic spots of sand, then head east of the town Vassiliki, or the seemingly undiscovered Kathisma Beach, where you will even millennia later you’ll have sense that this land has not changed much since Odysseus lived here – many scholars contend that the real, historical Ithaca was on these very lands. Odysseus must have reveled in the powdery golden sands and soul-warming sun, although in the end his gaze out into the pristine blue of the Adriatic Sea became too compelling; he just had to set sail and explore.

With a pair of jet skis, canoe, or equipment for windsurfing or kite surfing, you too may experience the thrill of the waters the Odysseus first felt, although unlike the great traveler, you won’t suffer being lost at sea for years – head back when you like, in order to enjoy some delightful basking in the sun, followed by a decent nightlife served up at the local resorts. Dance clubs, bars, theater and other entertainment options are well positioned in the inter-Grecian competition for tourism. Resorts, hotels and apartment rentals offer good value, possibly even a little bit less than those swarming the Cyclades may be charged.

Try not to stay stuck on the beach, though. The hidden charms of Levkas are its inland villages, connected by roads that are very cyclist friendly. One of the most famous attractions in Levkas is the Castle of Avia Mavra, which was converted from a Byzantine Church into a Turkish mosque. It makes for a fascinating, and highly rewarding visit.
