Ios

Ios

White-walled buildings and domes stacked up against the Mediterranean hillside, flaring into pink as the sun sets maudlin over the vast blue Aegean sea – idyllic Ios captivated the imaginations of travelers for centuries. If you do get any sleep on the Greek island of Ios, it will be at about this time, sunset, that you wake up from a sweaty siesta to the dulcet sound of waves lapping up against the beach, warm Aegean breezes caressing your face. You’ll be well refreshed for another night – and day – of revelry and fun; Ios rivals Ibiza as one of Europe’s biggest party islands.

World famous DJ’s in a plethora of nightclubs and mega clubs fill the night with the primal thumping and thudding of Trance, House and Dance, a scene that’s well outlived the raver 90’s and has evolved into something truly innovative, spectacular and entertaining. Indeed, Ios isn’t new to the game, as American and European hippies made this secret island their destination for hedonism as early as the 1970’s. There was a time, of course, when Ios was a peaceful, out of the way island known for its pristine tranquility. But although many historians have argued that Homer chose Ios as his final place to hang his head, it’s doubtful: the past four decades of nonstop partying would surely have woken up that ancient soul.

You yourself should try to wake up early and catch at least a few hours of daylight if you can. The beaches are truly splendid. While Mylopotas is by far the favorite destination for those to begin sipping their first ice-cold daiquiris of the day and taking in the best view of hard, bronzed bodies by daylight, a less crowded and more idyllic, otherworldly feel can be attained by visiting the quieter beaches out at Koumbara Bay, the mysteriously endless blue of the Aegean providing a wistful reminder of the rich mythology inspired in these islands. The hours of journeying by boat here give a definite feeling that you’ve landed on the end of the world, and that anything can happen.

It probably will, especially if you start out at the Aftershock, simply because it’s hot. The pulsing, throbbing music drives the sweating bodies across the dance floor and through deep, deep conversations at the bar. Even if it’s not “Greek philosophy”, chances are that you’ll get what you’re looking for at the Aftershock. Other great clubs include the Ios Club, Mojo, Lemon Club and Planet Ios.
