Manchester Manchester is a lively metropolis that tourists have begun flocking to for its historical attractions, austere beauty and intense, cosmopolitan energy. Famed for its roll in the industrial revolution as a principle factory town, Manchester has a gritty, working class feel that only adds to its allure as a modern day destination for tourism. In fact, one of the major attractions in Manchester is the People’s History Museum, which tells the story of the labor struggles and Dickensonian plight of working people over the last century. The museum focuses closely on the histories of individuals and groups who made Manchester go throughout the years, and is simply fascinating. For a more scientific introduction to the legacy of this industrial town visit the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Even if the exhibitions weren’t top class (which they are), the location of this science and industry museum is quite historical – the first railway station in the world! Held within the important building are expositions of a series of the world’s most important industrial inventions, including, of course, railway inventions but also the printing press, electricity and a variety of mechanistic applications. Of course, like many history-rich European cities, Manchester traces its history back to the Bronze Age, and there are various incredible monuments to the many epochs in between now and then. The Cathedral Church of St. John The Evangelist, for instance, is an understated 19th Century church that to this day plays a strong role in the British Catholic community. Going back further into time, the Manchester Cathedral on Victoria St. is a veritable medieval relic. One of the principle highlights of Manchester is its heated, pulsing nightlife which makes it one of Britain’s primary party destinations outside of London. Far from being left out by some supposed in-crowd, tourists fall right into step with the raucous, carefree and fun-loving cravenness that Manchester is all about. Corresponding to Britain’s increasing affluence, the bars, clubs, discos and after hours places have a gilded, posh quality that contrasts and combines with the city’s rustic origins, and adds to the excitement and fun of going out in Manchester. The 32 Club and the Abode are among the city’s hot party spots for late night fun, and the Gay Village, just south of the verdant Piccadilly Gardens is a Mecca for gay and lesbian bars. |
