Birmingham Birmingham might not seem like an obvious tourist destination. It’s well known that the gritty city has faced a violent, heaving past that encompasses one of the Industrial Revolution’s principle centers, as well as the wreckage and strife of heavy bombing during WWII. Yet in recent decades the city has experienced a veritable transformation that doesn’t cease to evolve.
Take, for example, the lovely Victoria Square, the grand and spacious plaza that was only recently renovated and has quickly become quite the authentic central meeting place for university students for locals to hang out. With three major universities, Birmingham boasts a strong, lively youth culture scene and the sense of festivity here is strong. Stroll through Cannon Hill Park, just one example of how Birmingham, upon which once the color of soot covered everything like the fallout from a volcano, is now green – a plethora of burgeoning verdant park space has made of much more livable – not to mention “visitable” city.
In addition to improved public spaces, Birmingham is now a proper cultural capital as is fitting for the second biggest city in England. Theatre, symphony, ballet, museums and the arts are all well celebrated here, with life and enthusiasm injected into the scene by the large student population, not to mention the traveling greats that pass through Birmingham.
For a more casual take on the nightlife, the extensive selection of bars, clubs, discos and after hour dance halls in Birmingham is, simply put, incredible. Start out the evening in one of England’s largest stops for students, the Goose O.V.T located on 561 Bristol Road is a mini tribute to British alcoholism, and a great taste of local student culture. Revolution is a much classier experience. Located over at Broad St, it is emblematic of Birmingham’s up-and-coming nightlife scene.
As a stop perfectly positioned for starting out a journey into the northerly reaches of England and up into Scotland, Birmingham is a great place to stay in a hotel or rental apartment. While England is generally an expensive country, visitors to Birmingham will generally receive excellent value at Birmingham hotels. |
