Munich

Munich

Capital of Bavaria and home to the world-famous Oktoberfest, you’ll have no trouble finding a well-irrigated beer garden in Munich, as well as a friendly, welcoming ambience that would make anybody feel at home. Yet although it is famed for its Dionysian delights, Munich is also internationally recognized for its high culture, and is home to countless tourist attractions for those who love everything from architecture to outdoor play, and from visual art to grand performances.

The museums in Munich are among Germany’s best. The Alte Pinakothek on Barer Straße 27, is an impressive block shaped, castle sized fortress of a building filled with hundreds of centuries works from the greats, including Rubens and el Greco. Next door, the Neue Pinakothek will bring you up to speed with the 1800’s. Along with the no-brainers of Van Gogh and Cezanne, the this collection does a fine job of representing German modern artists, although if you’re dying to see feel yourself entranced in the shimmering ambiguity of a Gerard Richter painting, then up the street at Pinakothek der Moderne is where you’ll find him alongside household names such as Dali and Picasso.

Nightlife in Munich is a tantalizing affair for culture vultures. Obviously, the Bayerische Staatsoper Opera House, smack dab in the center of it all at 2 Max-Joseph-Platz, is where the finest ballet and opera are featured. But before getting all excited, be forewarned that shows can sell out months in advance. Planning your trip to music involves more than airline tickets and hotel reservations – it’s making sure tickets for two will be ready for you at Will Call – even two years from now! Whether or not the opera house works out, the English Garden is to die for. Its Asian pagoda and teahouse, as well as a Greek temple provide good, Zen vibes while it’s also a place of outdoor performances ranging from ballet to soccer. The English Garden is a popular favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Like many European cities much of Munich can be reached on foot – and is actually enjoyed best that way. Therefore, it’s highly recommended that you book a hotel or apartment rental in the center of town, ideally near the impressive concrete Max-Joseph-Platz (surrounded by cafés, restaurants, bars and fun places for quick eats). Also, book ahead.
