Languedoc Roussillon

Languedoc Roussillon

Vineyards and ocean, what better combination of scenic beauty could you imagine! Both of them ornament the Languedoc Roussillon, a colorful French coastal region that connects Catalonia and the French Riviera and is an absolutely brilliant destination for families, romantic couples and adventurous backpackers seeking a taste of French diversion in a sunny, relaxed setting.

Languedoc Roussillon is also one of the largest wine growing regions in all of France – nay, the world. Yet despite its prolific production capacity, it doesn’t fall short of the finesse featured in compete regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. Indeed, the conditions here are perfect, the soil is sandy and clay like and the Mediterranean sun bakes down upon these vines - bottled and ready for your tasting are some of the world’s finest French wines.

That’s why wine lovers flock here to taste the rich varieties, and there are no shortage of tasting rooms ready to serve you a glass, amidst their cool, earthy scent of their coastal cellars. Corbières is a sumptuous estate, highly recommended, as are the Côtes de Roussillon and the Faugères varieties. Well known among the red wines produced here are Syrah as well as the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Merlot, which have done quite finely. Among the best whites here are Roussanne, Clairette and Chardonnay. Of course, those with a fetish for sweet white wine would have it no other way – driver, take me straight to Languedoc Roussillon! The Muscat blanc comes to mind…

Wine, however, seems to be a natural progenitor of culture, which might help to explain the astonishing number of historical monuments packed into this tiny region – nearly 1,500 in total! A cycling tour would be a wonderful way to understand the complexity of this region. Renting a bike is easy, as is finding a guided tour is you’re up for a group cycling expedition.

In addition to the cultural highlights, the sheer beauty of the landscape and the cleanliness of the beaches in Languedoc Roussillon provide a fine backdrop for hiking, horseback riding and golfing – there are some great courses here – in addition to an intense variety of water sports including water skiing, diving, windsurfing, boating and fishing.

Waterfront hotels and apartment rentals are also highly sought after, so if you’re planning a vacation in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France, it is important to book your room or apartments well in advance. The peak tourist season is in the hot summer months of July and August.
