Cote dAzur The stunning, snow covered Alps stake out a formidable border between France and Italy, although the respective regions of each country are sought as prime destinations, due to their natural beauty and wide range of outdoor activities available. The Côte d´'Azur, or “Blue Coast” of France is particularly stunning, as it combines the azure blue Mediterranean sea with the dramatic heaps of stone and dirt surging out from the Earth.
Côte d´'Azur is home to the legendary French Riviera, traditionally a destination of the rich and famous, the French Riviera today invites anybody who enjoys the true refinement induced by the sun and leisure. Nice, one of the highlights, is a Mecca of revel makers. The nightlife is some of the best in France, outside of Paris, and is diverse as it is robust. You can pick from Irish pubs filled with raucous expats on spring break, or sip from cocktails at cool, mellow jazz clubs. Despite its fame as a party destination, Nice also has a cultural backbone with works by the likes of Matisse and Chagall being displayed at their respective museums.
The beaches in Nice aren’t exactly made of powdery white sand, but the Mediterranean water is delicious and refreshing, especially in the blazing hot summer months of July and August, which are also peak travel months. In fact, if you want to experience the sexy charm of Nice without the interruption of blaring horns and booked hotels, you then the cooler months of September, or May and June, will provide a perfect Nice for you.
Other towns that you just can’t miss in the French Riviera include St. Tropez, a yachting harbor with a splendid promenade that runs by a series of stately, yet playfully colorful waterfront houses gazing into the aquamarine blue of the Mediterranean. Ramatuelle is famed for its nightlife, and Villefranche-sur-Mer is another popular resort town with a French Language Institute, which is the secret international code for “party time.”
Outdoor activities in this geographically diverse region range from sailing, water skiing, swimming and other beach activities, to land sports including hiking in the elevations and cycling along the colorful and scenic coastline of Côte d´'Azur. |
