Porec

Porec

A veritable gem of white walls and red tiled roofs upon the coast of Croatian Istria, Porec turns into a lively cultural center during the peak summer months of July and August, when Jazz and Classical music festivals display the best of Croatian artists to enthusiastic locals and curious tourists alike. If you’re into theater, Porec is also the place to be during the summer, and information about plays and movie showings can be found through the local press. However, you might not always be able to access entertainment in your native language. You may end up doing as many visitors do by taking in the spontaneous, yet surprisingly advanced street art that pops up at artful and opportune moments for your entertainment pleasure.

The Euphrasius Basilica was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a site of pilgrimage for students of Byzantine art, because of the mosaics dating back to the 6th century BC. Experts agree that these are among the best examples of Byzantine art in the entire world.

Visitors to Porec should be aware, however, that this ancient town is far from a one-hit wonder. Indeed, a series of impressive architectural sites make for a solid two days’ worth of exploration, if you are lucky enough to be able to include so much time for Porec in your itinerary. Most notable are the Pentagonal Tower, the Great Temple of Neptune and the ornate gothic house. Find information about an ideal route at the city’s tourist office located in the central square. Just outside of Porec you will find the series of fascinating Baredine Caves, ancient limestone caverns that come with a guided tour in English available. Bring the family and learn about the stalactites and stalagmites as well as the plant and animal life that creeps and crawls underneath the ground.

Do be aware, however, that despite Porec’s vibrant nightlife and culture, the beaches are rocky and leave a lot to be desired. However, if you plan to stay here for more than a day or so, you’ll undoubtedly crave beach access – and you shouldn’t be denied it. Therefore, you should hop on a boat and ferry out to St. Nicholas Island, soak in the golden sun on a powdery white beach and recharge yourself for more amazing architectural wonders back in Porec.
