Kvarner Gulf

Kvarner Gulf

When traveling between Istria and Dalmatia, tell your driver to wax his ears while you tie yourself to the passenger seat. The breathtaking harbor at Kvarner Gulf has given rise to some of Croatia’s wildest beach resort towns, especially Opatija, to which vacationers flock in the peak, summer months. It’s not just the pristine waters that make Kvarner Gulf so attractive, but also the incredible Croatian mountains cropping up alongside the coast, looming above the throngs of merry makers below at the picture-perfect white sand beaches and upscale resorts along the coast as well as the numerous islands held within this microcosm of sinful pleasure.

For all your transportation needs in the Kvarner Gulf, the city of Rijeka is a starting point for buses, taxis, car rental and ferries going out to the islands. It even has an airport. While many make these islands their temporary homes by renting hotels, apartments or booking resort vacations well in advance, many launch out from Rijeka simply for a day or two of island hopping, enjoying the unique views that only the water’s surface can provide. Must-visit islands include Krk, Losinj, Cres, Rab and Mali Losinj, although the crowds you enjoyed on the mainland are echoed on the islands as well.

Check the weather report before booking your hotel anywhere in the Kvarner Gulf, because a serious downside to this enclave are the fierce winds, call “bura”, which are unpleasant and typically drive tourists away. After all, Kvarner Gulf is decidedly an outdoor destination. When the wind evens out, it’s absolutely idyllic for water sports like sailing, yachting, water skiing and windsurfing. In addition, the land-based sports of tennis, beach volleyball and more are commonly available at the resorts. When dining out in the Kvarner Gulf, be sure to sample local seafood dishes and Mediterranean fusion that are typical to the region. Resort lodging is highly recommended, and various packages are available.
