Hvar

Hvar

Hvar is distinguished as one of the most richly historical islands off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. In an archipelago well traversed by Odysseus (indeed, he was lost here for years), Hvar’s distinction is no light matter. Its main city Stari Grad dates back to 400 years B.C. and gracefully hosted Venice’s navy as an Adriatic outpost during the height of the Renaissance. This brought with it a cultural richness that is evident to this day, as well as a series of bloody revolutions. Yet strangely, constant rebuilding seems to have done Hvar a good turn. It’s low-storied buildings of white adobe shine brilliantly for tourists ferrying in, and its well worn yet smooth and brilliant marble-made cobblestones breathe history and culture at every step.

Pacing through this relic of the past, the intrepid traveler will be delighted to hear an occasional sequence of notes plucked from the cello of a master, as many of Hvar’s conservatories offer intensive music lessons during the summer – and some throughout the year. When the teacher is done giving a demonstration and the students set in on their string instruments, the Hvar pedestrian will do best to move on.

Discover sanctuary in the St. Stephens Cathedral, which was begun during the period of occupation by the Venetian Navy. Having taken a couple of centuries to complete, it is a splendid mixture of both Baroque and Renaissance styles.

A great look out point can be found at the Spanish Fortress, or “Citadel”, which sports amazing panoramic views and a prime lookout over the Harbor, itself among the important attractions on Hvar. Make your way down through the intricately wending Venice-like streets and watch the sunset from the harbor. As night enshrouds the island, look up to the citadel, which becomes illuminated like a shining beacon upon the hilltop. Dwarfing all of these attractions, however, are the white sandy beaches which travelers find to be among the most spectacular in Croatia. Finding a place to stay near the beach is easy, if you remember to book ahead.
