Varna One of the classic complaints about beach resorts in any country is that you might as well be anywhere. Cool water, hotel high rises and waters sports and other activities are great, but where’s the local flavor? If that’s what you’re wondering, then Varna is your answer when vacationing on the coastline of Bulgaria.
A port city, Varna does a classy job of combining the savory fun and excitement of a beachside resort with a rich presentation of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage, one that spans millennia. Starting out at the Varna Beach Resort on Varna Bay, vacationers can bring the whole family to set up camp on the powdery tan sand and bath in the golden sun for hours during the summer, periodically dipping into the cool, invigorating Black Sea salt – characteristic of much of the Bulgarian coastline, the beach at Varna bay is safe for children, and adults who might want to swim out a little further. In addition, water sports here are abundant, although a much better yacht club is a few kilometers north at Golden Sands.
Pulling in from the beach, travelers are enchanted and enthralled with the jewel of a town that is Varna. The Theotokos Cathedral makes a good starting point for a walking tour of Varna, a Bulgarian orthodox church dating back over a hundred years. Be sure to step into the cool interior and turn your head upward – the vivid purples, blues and magentas create a not-too-distant echo of the Sistine Chapel, although here it is baroque influenced, as noted in the delectably gaudy chandeliers. Other attractions in Varna include the Railway Station, the Archaeological Museum, Roman Baths, Planetarium, and a variety of churches, although none quite measure up to the Theotokos.
Nightlife in Varna is quit well done, although to be honest the Golden Sands is really the hopping cultural center for vacationers who are looking for more intensity and action. Nightclubs, bars, discos, restaurants and casinos are laid out like candy at Golden Sands, yours for the taking. That said, nothing compares to the old-world charm of Varna, with its beach as well as its city life. Make sure to book a place to stay as early as possible for this increasingly popular – not to mention affordable – destination along the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. |
