Liege

Liege

A booming industrial town in its heyday, Liege was once more powerful than it is today. For travelers, however, this is perfect. Liege, a city that never quite caught up to the 21st century, is a veritable jewel of history tucked into the verdant plains of Belgium.

Yes, there is at least one important piece of cultural trivia: Liege is home to acclaimed novelist George Simenon, who created the famous police detective Maigret. Mostly, though, Liege is a great destination for pure relaxation – although you may have to swallow some refinement while you’re at it: the cuisine here is amazing. Take, for example, the restaurant Au Vieux Liege, a classy seafood place that makes a tasteful nod to the River Meuse that skirts alongside the city.

When out and about touring Liege, set aside an afternoon to hop on a cruise or hire a boat rental to tour Liege and the town’s outskirts via the River Meuse. These enchanting, watery excursions slide by historic buildings that seem to be pulled straight out of a fairytale. On the way, you’ll no doubt pass by other happy vacationers – and locals – making revelry in their boats upon the river’s surface. By foot, Liege offers a wide array of charming nooks and crannies, undiscovered side streets and delightful outdoor cafés at nearly every corner. It must be the proximity to Paris; café culture here is strong.

Among the popular sites to see in Liege is the main Cathedral, although those seeking a slightly steeper adventure might try their luck ascending the Bueren Mountain. Actually, it is really more of an extended stairway than anything really resembling a mountain. Nevertheless, it is here that you will be able to see a stunning panoramic of the city, so remember to bring your camera.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Liege, there are plenty of nice hotels in Liege with English-speaking staff that will typically provide good value, although the rooms may be a bit smaller than what you’d normally expect.
